When it comes to LEGO sets, there have been some impressive series that have been released over the years. The LEGO Icons Modular Building series is one that always holds a special place in our hearts. The polished look when they are complete, the high piece counts, the specialized design features, and the interconnectability all add to the value of LEGO’s modular buildings.
One thing that builders should know, though, is that you don’t have to limit yourself to the official modular sets when you want to build your perfect city. There are several LEGO sets that are compatible with LEGO Modular Buildings, and a lot of reasons why you might want to experiment with some of our ideas.

What Are Modular Buildings?
If you are unfamiliar with LEGO Icons Modular Buildings, it is good to understand them before learning about which LEGO sets are compatible with them. So, here is a brief overview of what the Modular Building series is all about.
Fans were first introduced to the Modular Building series back in 2007 when Cafe Corner was released. Since then, LEGO has released one new addition to the series each year. For serious collectors, January is a very important month for these sets. In 2025, LEGO released its 20th modular building, which was a large Victorian-era structure called Tudor Corner. It is a residential and commercial space and fits in very nicely with the rest of the modular buildings on the street.
All the buildings in the modular series are designed to connect with one another, allowing them to form a single, interconnected structure over time. A final note about modular buildings is that they are made to minifigure scale, which is different than a lot of the other sets.
What Makes a Set Modular-Compatible?
There are three basic things that a LEGO set needs to be compatible with the Modular Building sets. They need to be built to minifigure scale, they need to match thematically, and they should be built in a way that allows for connectivity with other sets.
Minifigure Scale
When a LEGO set is built to minifigure scale, it is usually much larger than a standard LEGO set. The idea is to build structures that are big enough for the minifigures to appear as ‘normal sized’ as compared to a real-life scenario.
So, any structure that is built to mimic real-world proportions will be compatible with the modular buildings. That said, size is important, but style is too.
Shown below are some of the minifigures from the 18+ LEGO Icons 10326 Natural History Museum Modular Building Collection. The set was released back in December 2023.
Themes and Architectural Details
All 20 of the LEGO Icons Modular Buildings have been created to complement one another. While each has its own unique features, all 20 of the modular buildings currently in circulation complement each other perfectly.
Not only should your modular-compatible set show an attention to intricate architectural details, but it should also share a color scheme that goes well with the olive green, sand blue, and tan colors that are popular with the modular sets.
Any sets that you plan on attaching to a modular building should also take into account the multi-story layouts, tiled floors, removable roofs, storefronts on the ground level, and highly detailed interiors. Compatible sets don’t necessarily need to have those features, but they should be complementary to the design features common with the modular buildings.
Some popular sets for this are Marvel Towers, custom MOC buildings, and some of the larger LEGO City landmarks.
Shown below is 18+ LEGO Marvel 76269 Avengers Tower. This set was released back in November 2023.
Features of the Official LEGO Modular Buildings Collection
Other than the size and shape of the buildings you want to add to your modular build, there are also features that the modular sets do very well. If you want your compatible building to fit in on The Street, it is good to make sure your attention to detail is aligned with the modular series.
Some of the things that fans love about modular sets are that they give builders a sense of realism, and that also adds to the playability factor.
Modulars often provide an array of functions and intricate details to play with. You get things like photo studios, jazz clubs with stages for the jazz singer to perform on, bank vaults, and even evidence lockers.
On the 10th anniversary of the Modular Series, LEGO released Assembly Square, which featured a dance studio and an art gallery. With all the minifigures that came with that set and all the preceding ones, there were plenty of viewers for the displayed art.
Other features that add a feeling of realism include features like rooftop terraces, upper-level living spaces, billboards, and signs for the small businesses.

Licensed Sets That Fit with LEGO Modulars
Now that you know a little more about modular buildings and how you should approach incorporating new ideas into your modular build, here are some great licensed sets that go well with the series.
- Daily Bugle (76178): The Daily Bugle is a skyscraper from the Marvel Universe. It has a lot of great features that could enhance a modular city build. There are modular-style floors, pin connectors, and several minifigures that could add a whole new element to your minifigure population.
- Sanctum Sanctorum (76218): This three-floor, corner building is designed to look like a classic building in New York City. It is the home of Dr Strange from the Infinity Saga, but the set looks great next to the other modular buildings.
- Avengers Tower (76269): The Avengers Tower is a large skyscraper that would be a perfect addition to a downtown-like setup. It would also work as a standalone building somewhere near (but not connected to) your modular street.
- The X-Mansion (76294): The X-Mansion, of the other hand, would fit in very nicely on the street. The mansion has a classic look and could easily become a center for aristocracy within your city. That is, of course, if you don’t want to X-Men to keep it!
- Shop Now: LEGO Shop at Home (USA | Canada | UK | Australia), Amazon.com USA, Amazon.ca Canada and Amazon.co.uk UK
One of the nice things about introducing licensed sets into your modular city is that they provide a chance to enhance the storytelling opportunities. They also bring in a lot of interesting pieces that the official sets don’t have.

NINJAGO City Sets and Compatibility
Another popular line that is compatible with modular builds is the NINJAGO City sets series. While they do have a different look and feel than what you’re seeing with traditional modular buildings, they also add new playability features and more diversity to your city.
What’s more is that they have pin connectors and other modular-compatible elements that allow builders to seamlessly integrate the set with their city.
- NINJAGO City Gardens (71741): City Gardens is a large set. It is tall and has multiple levels, making this one of the most unique add-ons on our list. There are many water features and even more minifigures that come with it.
- NINJAGO City (70620): NINJAGO City follows a very similar theme to the City Gardens set, but it is far more complex in its design. There are workers and inhabitants, and they all seem quite busy. A suggestion would be to put these two sets together and create a water-based region where these structures can host certain types of activity.

City, Parks, & Seasonal Sets That Work Well with Modulars
Other than licensed sets, there is a large number of city and seasonal sets that you can add to your modular city to enhance the realism and add features.
Here are a couple of our favorites:
- Spring Lantern Festival (80107): The Spring Lantern Festival is a beautifully decorated park area that could easily add a touch of nature and style to your modular setup. It is built with a minifigure scale, so integration feels easy and natural.
- LEGO City Main Square (60271): The LEGO City Main Square is probably not your first choice because of the fact that it is not built to the minifigure scale. However, the set comes with several fun features like a tram, some vehicles, and a small park.
- Picnic in the Park (60326): This set is simple and small, and it is a very easy way to add in some life-like detail if you have any unused spaces that are too small to incorporate larger sets. You get a tree, a picnic table, and a gardener’s cart. The set also comes with a courier’s bike and a squirrel! It could look very nice next to the Boutique Hotel or Corner Garage.
- Fountain Garden (10359): Fountain Garden is not built to minifigure scale, but it does blend in well with a modular building scene. This 1,302-piece set gives you opportunities to either build the garden as it was intended or use the elements to decorate other parts of your city. There is a tiered garden, pergolas with flowering vines, and some sitting areas for your minifigures. Placing it somewhere near Town Hall or Assembly Square could be a good idea.
- Elf Club House (10275): The Elf Club House is a seasonal set that allows modular builders to bring in some holiday charm. Of course, you can easily modify this to make it less ‘Elf’ so you can use it to create diversity in the architectural features of your build. For example, this structure could easily become a quaint B&B or traditional bakery of some kind.

Modular City Expansion: Roads and Open Spaces
Speaking of ways to bring a sense of authenticity to your designs, there are actually many ways to do that. LEGO City Main Square and the Spring Lantern Festival sets are not the only ways to add in a park or common area to your modular city – not by a long shot.
Here are some ideas to get you started:
Roads and Intersections
- Road Plates (60304): The LEGO Road Plates were released in 2021, and they are a great way to begin any expansion project for a modular build. LEGO’s road plates are made to minifigure scale and they make it easy for builders to add sidewalks, grassy edges, crosswalks, and the road pieces themselves. Builders like them because road plates make it easier to integrate features like parks and plazas. They are also good for creating public gathering spots within your city.
- Shopping Street (60306): While it may not look like it, this retired set offers some interesting building potential for modular creations. The buildings themselves are a bit oversimplified and childish, but there are many other features that are useful. From the road plates to the street lights to the EV charging station and vehicles, this is the kind of set that can quickly upgrade the playability of your city.
- Train Station (60335): As with Shopping Street, Train Station is a relatively simple set in terms of its design characteristics and architectural details. But it comes with many useful pieces that can be used to bring things to life. The station itself is nice, but the road plates, railroad crossing signals, roadworks truck, and city bus all add to the appeal. Placing it somewhere near the Fire Brigade set or Town Hall could make a lot of sense.

Recreational and Community Spaces
- Roller Coaster (10261): This impressive set adds a fun recreational activity to your build. It was produced by LEGO Creator Expert which was later joined with LEGO Icons (modular buildings are released under the Icons name now), making it a natural fit.
- Haunted House (10273): Another set released by LEGO Icons is Haunted House. This set is not included in the official list of LEGO Icons Modular Buildings, but it has so many similarities in terms of style, theme, and building techniques; it makes it easy to integrate.
Shown below is 18+ LEGO 10273 Haunted House. This set was released back in Summer June 2020.
Public Services
- Firehouse Headquarters (75827): Firehouse Headquarters has the same design as the Ghostbusters’ headquarters. The old brick building adds a historic feel that brings a nice bit of diversity to your city design. It can be left with the Ghostbusters branding, but it would also be easy to modify it enough to match your modular building street.
- Hospital (60330): Every city needs a hospital, and there aren’t very many official LEGO sets that fit the bill here. This modern hospital set from the City series (released in 2022) has a simple design that resembles a building made mostly from glass. Placing it near the Police Station to create a zone for public services could be an interesting idea.

Future Sets and New Possibilities
One thing we love about LEGO is that there is always something new to look forward to. One new addition to the LEGO Icons lineup is a series called ‘Restaurants of the World.’ So far, we only have one set from this series, so there is much we don’t know yet. However, we can get a lot of clues from this first set.
- French Cafe (10362): If you are looking for a Parisian bistro for your modular city, the French Cafe might be an excellent choice. It is not quite scaled to minifigures, but it is close. There is a table out front, and minifigures look pretty comfortable sitting there. The detailed exterior is what really makes this set an interesting addition to a modular build.
- Shop Now: LEGO Shop at Home (USA | Canada | UK | Australia), Amazon.com USA, Amazon.ca Canada and Amazon.co.uk UK
Now, it should be noted that this suggestion has some potential cons to be aware of before trying to integrate it with a modular build. However, the set shows some interesting potential, which is why it made it on our list.
The biggest con is that the set designers decided that we should only get the front of the building. Instead of being a complete, modular construction with interiors and multi-story concepts, it seems that ‘Restaurants of the World’ are going to be standalone cultural highlights.
What immediately comes to my mind is the ability to either use MOC-style building techniques to complete the structures or have a line of cultural eateries along the edge of my building space, so that only the fronts of the buildings are necessary.

Display, Aesthetic, and Customization Tips
Each set in the LEGO Icons Modular Building series is designed to look great as a standalone project. However, designers also have a close eye on the other sets in the series, because it is important that all the sets in the series work nicely together.
Color tones to look out for (or replace for) are earth tones and muted pastels. Modular sets use many colors, but when you see all the sets together, nothing looks out of place. Is there an HOA on the LEGO Icons street? Quite possibly!
When adding sets from other lines, like the Avengers Tower or something from the NINJAGO line, the brighter colors are immediately noticeable. Anything you can do to bridge that color gap will help the overall appearance of your build.
Another thing to consider are the baseplate and ground alignments. Not all baseplates are designed the same way, and modular structures use slightly different techniques than standard sets. So, when adding in your own custom ground designs, you’ll want to take inspiration and building notes from the modular building sets.
Finally, when combining other sets or using MOC techniques to expand your modular city, get creative! Repurposing structures and sharing details from one building to another is a great way to add a sense of uniformity to the overall city plan.
