Fresh AFOL Convert

Post by kemcab » Mon Jun 16, 2014 7:16 am

Hey everybody! I'm an adult fan of Lego who found a passion for this amazing 'toy' a few months ago through the help of my wife. As a kid, I spent a lot of time outdoors, but for indoor play I had video games and action figures. Never had Legos and never gave it much thought. After my wife bought a couple sets for me back in January I immediately fell in love.

It's cathartic, is as stress-relieving as rock climbing, and blends well with both my creative side and logic/software engineer way of thinking. I've spent a decent chunk of change on sets so far, taking a few into work for temporary display before bringing them back and cannibalizing them for parts for MOCs.

Soooo, I'm a recent convert, am loving it, and have a new, life-long hobby. I look forward to seeing what everybody builds, learning all I can, and participating in the community.

It's interesting that your AFOL hobby was not the product of childhood nostalgia which is, at least in part, the way most of us got back into collecting. Welcome to the fold!

Welcome! To TnB and to a new life-long obsession.
I'm curious, did your wife play with LEGO sets when she was young? Seems an odd gift for someone who never had any.
Feel free to post pics of your MOCs!
I have inoperable cancer and am unable to work. Any gifts would be appreciated. Thank you!

Well, I had a couple Lego sets prior to my wife which were given to me by a previous girlfriend. They were a $12 Indiana Jones and similarly sized/priced Marvel set. They sat on my desk, but I never really did anything with them.

Another hobby of mine is astronomy, where I expend a lot of effort writing software on the side. My day job was getting pretty stressful earlier this year, and my wife decided to get something astronomy related that she thought I might have fun with - The City Space Shuttle (#3367). It was very relaxing to put together, and I turned it into a bit of a team effort at the office. The Lego addiction set in immediately, and has been going since.

That's nice! Welcome and looking forward at your MOCs. It seems your wife is more creative than you.
