21050 Architeture Studio Potential Return in August 2014

Post by Toys N Bricks » Wed Jul 02, 2014 3:09 pm

Update: If you are willing to pay a little higher price, Barnes & Nobles has these sets available for $174.95 on their online site as well as their Brick & Mortar stores. (thanks anakinisvader)

There's rumors going that the USA exclusive LEGO Architecture Studio 21050 set could potentially be coming back in August 2014. It is currently listed as temporarily out of stock. The set was released last year in August 2013 but was sold out within months of release. Price was $149.99 USD back then, but it appears that LEGO has decided to raise the price to $159.99 USD now. If you can't afford the set, staff vynsane has created an LDD file with the pieces in it.

Thanks to Sethbrown555 for writing in.

Barnes and Noble carries these for $179.99. I just saw two at a B&N close to me.

Why is the set so popular? All I can see is just normal bricks.

^ And the price doesn't fit the 10 cents per piece. It's almost 13 cents each!

^^ I think partly due to the original run being so limited. Aside from that, the free-build concept, simplistic monochrome palette and large scale probably appeals to adults who had LEGO as children but are not necessarily interested in being AFOLs.

^ While the price-per-piece may be above the much-vaunted "golden ratio", $0.10/piece only gets you so far and can be used as a relatively useful guideline. It's not, however, the be-all and end-all determiner of the value of a LEGO set. This topic has it pretty well covered.

In our world, however, it's interesting to note that the seemingly plain, readily-available pieces that are included are actually quite a good deal more expensive via Bricklink (at least at the original MSRP), as evidenced by the cost-analysis performed on the blog New Elementary.

Also, while searching for that blog post above, I found it listed on Toys R Us as well - and at original MSRP to boot. It is not available for order online, but does state "available in stores". Has anyone ever seen this at TRU?

The book it comes with also makes it desirable.

The toysrus site does show that, and has for a very long time. Barnes and nobles do have them, for those who get the 20% off member coupons, the fine print now says it excludes architectural studio, mindstorms and the Death Star. So 175 ish minus the 10% discount is a bit steep from 149 prior.
