[REVIEW] 30042 Mini Sub

Post by legitimatealex » Thu Sep 09, 2010 10:06 am

Indexed

30042 Mini Sub
Price: $2.99
Pieces: 36
Price Per Piece: $.08/piece
Minifigures: 1
LEGO Description: None, it's a tiny tiny poly bag.

Image

So there's the bag. I tried making it a little less wrinkled so I could get a better shot of the packaging.

Image

Here's the back. Like the other World Racer Buggy being offered by Target there's a little promo code for the LEGO club membership as well as a bunch of disclaimers in multiple languages.

Image

Here's the minifigure that comes with the set. His name is 'Lance Spears,' which I have to comment on because it sounds completely like a porn star's name. Also I have to point out the redundancy of the name. As for the stuff that actually matters though, he has excellent printing on the legs and torso and face.

Image

He also has backside printing and another side to his face. This side seems to say 'Woops I just broke wind at an awkward moment, I hope no one notices.'

Image

And here he is all suited up in the Atlantis gear. Flippers and a HUGE scuba suit.

Image

Here's the whole mess fresh out of the bag. There were no other tiny bags inside this bag. If there were, I think it would have been another strike against LEGO for their redundancy in this set. There's not many pieces of interest to note here. There is a 'crystal ball' of sorts that sits on the front. Two tiny fences make up the sides.

Image

The instructions come in a tiny folded up piece of paper. There's only one side for this impulse set.

Image

Here's the set in its whole 36 piece completeness. It's a little more complicated than the World Racer Buggy but has pretty much none of the Buggy's aesthetic appeal of sleekness. This build looks pretty clunky and bulky. I'm not actually sure how well this would move through water.

Image

I'm a little surprised by the lack of one of the power rings that come with other Atlantis sets. Not that it was really a big deal but the tiny little jewel that the sub is picking up seems to be a sort of cop out for not providing a ring. But I digress. It is not a big deal.

So here's the rundown.

Would I recommend the set? Yes. It's tiny, interesting and comes with a minifigure, something that all good impulse sets should do. There's at least one piece of interest here, mainly the crystal ball. It's always nice to have another Atlantis suit too. I really can't find anything wrong with the set. It's cheap, efficient and it comes with more than enough LEGO pieces to make the price worth it.

Go get this set. Find it at your local Target.

I dig the hell out of this little guy because it looks like 'Little Geek', the ROV from 'The Abyss'!

I built mine yesterday because I though that this set would be hard for little kids to put together. Lots of small pieces. I dig the minifig that comes with it. The globe is pretty cool. I'll have to pick a few more. Can't beat these promo sets at $3. I really like them.

window into doodlebird's life:

every thursday,
my 6 yr old and i have "building day"
where he gets to pick one set out of the closet,
and we build it.
in the closet are sets ranging from $3 polybags up to the UCS falcon.
and most everything in between.

this is what he chose this week.
what the what ???
the closet is jammed full of stuff...
it's really more of a tiny room than a closet.

but sometimes, little dudes like to build little stuff.
it's quick, it's easy... and you get to play with it faster!

nice little stocking stuffer / gift basket item...
surprise for no special reason at all.

paired with any other atlantis set,
it becomes instantly playable.

I don't get it. I thought I read on Brickipedia that Sam Rhodes comes with the set, and it even looks like her on the bag...

You're absolutely right about the bag - definitely not the same head as in the package. Brickipedia probably just went with it based on the package. Interesting situation, I wonder what prompted the change.

Wow you're right. The minifig on the front of the bag does not match the one I have. The eyebrows are black on the bag and brown on the minifig. Interesting. I wonder why they switched? Maybe they thought no one could tell with that big helmet on?

As cool as I think this set is, the change saves me a trip to Target. I want Sam Rhodes, and that was what was attractive about this set. She's only in a couple sets, while Lance Spears is in the magnets and a bunch of sets, and Bobby Buoy is in the Birckmaster book, etc.

I'll have to look at the real thing in greater detail when I get home, but the picture in the initial post looks like the head has a big red set of lips on it...

I took a look at my packaging again (I kept it, what of it?) That's definitely a chick on there. There is a huge set of red lips on mine. If that's not a chick then we have our first lip stick wearing LEGO man.

Brickipedia is a wiki. A lot of our contributors only edit the most recent themes (or Star Wars), and most of them do not know a lot about these sets. Thanks for the catch, I'll fix that. By the way, this looks like a great set. I need to start getting these polybags at target if I can find them....

This is a great set. I picked up 4 of them this season. I dig the suits and the head. plus I like the parts that come with it.
