Re: Border's in-store only coupon roundup (33-50% off)
Some news broke today that Borders is closing down a whole grip of stores, including 12 stores in the San Francisco Bay Area (near me). Here is a list of all the store closures, although it looks like the list isn't sorted very well.
http://www.publishersweekly.com/binary- ... /242-1.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I don't know how quickly they will close. Anyone know?
This doesn't bode well for Lego purchasers I guess. Although I have yet to buy a Lego set from Borders; every time I go in their stuff is so high priced, even a %40 off coupon just makes it so their stuff is barely MSRP. Guess that's why they're going belly-up?

Re: Borders - Bankruptcy Imminent?
Stupid post edit timeout.
The 200 stores being closed, by state.
If one of these was your local store and there are no others nearby, your Rewards Plus account (if you upgraded) is now pretty much useless for LEGO unless they start carrying sets online. :/

Re: Border's in-store only coupon roundup (33-50% off)
Should be within a month or two, with sales at the closing stores likely starting as early as this weekend to take advantage of President's Day.Zeya wrote:I don't know how quickly they will close. Anyone know?
I think you need to check your math and/or what you think MSRP for some of these sets are, as (with the exception of CMFv2) the coupons always drop Borders' prices below MSRP.Zeya wrote:Although I have yet to buy a Lego set from Borders; every time I go in their stuff is so high priced, even a %40 off coupon just makes it so their stuff is barely MSRP.
Code: Select all
MSRP BRP BRP-33% BRP-40%
------- ------- ------- -------
SW Battlepack $ 11.99 $ 12.99 $ 8.70 $ 7.79
Flying Mummy Attack $ 19.99 $ 23.99 $ 16.07 $ 14.39
Battle of Naboo $ 24.99 $ 34.99 $ 23.44 $ 20.99
Hogwarts Castle $129.99 $149.99 $100.49 $ 89.99
Most other sets usually work out to be around 15-25% off MSRP for the 33% coupon, and 20-30% for the 40%.
Re: Borders - Bankruptcy Imminent?
I too was coming in to post the list. Suprisingly 2 of the stores near me are staying open. But I suppose there won't be any coupons soon?
I wonder if the stores that are closing will even have the Lego for clearance or if those will get moved to other stores? One store near me closed around January and the lowest they went on certain books was 40% off b/c they could return stock to the publisher....no better than the coupon. Some books were $1 each or 2 for $1, but nothing really great.
This is kind of sad, I really did prefer Borders to B&N in general.

When the one near me was in the process of closing, the Lego was gone before I got there. I'm not sure if it was sold or transferred to another store.atmail35 wrote:I wonder if the stores that are closing will even have the Lego for clearance or if those will get moved to other stores?
The Chestnut Hill store on Rt.9, right?atmail35 wrote:One store near me closed around January and the lowest they went on certain books was 40% off b/c they could return stock to the publisher....no better than the coupon. Some books were $1 each or 2 for $1, but nothing really great.
Re: Borders - Bankruptcy Imminent?
Yes, it was in Chestnut Hill. I only ended up going in the last few days before it closed b/c I was at that Mall. Honestly I couldn't find one thing worth buying at that stage (even books at $1 or 50 cents - not worth cluttering my house). FWIW, I never thought that store carried a ton of Lego. The toy area was pretty modest.Mantisking wrote:When the one near me was in the process of closing, the Lego was gone before I got there. Borders To Close 75 More Stores.
The WSJ covers the same news (and more) in a rosier light, saying that things are entirely dependent on negotiations with Borders' landlords, and that the final number of additional closures may be closer to 20-25.

Re: Borders - Bankruptcy Imminent?
Went to Borders at Columbus Circle in Manhattan today. They had four Hogwarts Castle sets on display, as well as a bunch of Ninjago Dojos and the new Space Shuttle set. I'm taking this as a glimmer of hope that they will be continuing to get more new sets in as the year progresses. They did not have any of these sets in stock on Monday when I breezed through or two weeks ago when they had the big 40% coupon. These may have been shipped in from stores that are closing, but I don't know if they're allowed to do that. Has anyone else seen new stock in at their local Borders?

That's too bad that more stores are closing. I really wonder if they will be able to make a comeback/recover. :(

Re: Borders - Bankruptcy Imminent?
I'm just going to take a shot in the dark and give a solid 'no' to that question. Honestly they take up a lot of space, don't offer anything better than any other bookstore and they didn't have an ebook reader like other places.atmail35 wrote:That's too bad that more stores are closing. Bah they were always terrible. And I keep getting 40% off coupons for Borders but there's no longer one in my state...aaaah darn.

If I was still living at my old address, the two nearest to me would be closing. As it is, I'll be down to one near me once the Shrewsbury store closes.legitimatealex wrote:Bah they were always terrible. And the coupons can no longer be used for LEGO purchases either. They explicitly exclude toys/games. At least the last two coupons circulating have.legitimatealex wrote:Really? When did this happen? Re: Borders - Bankruptcy Imminent?
I imagine most have already written off Borders between their Chapter 11 and the exclusion of LEGO from the regular coupons at the remaining stores, but for those that still have a vague interest...
