lego sets for a reasonable price

Post by cacoolee » Mon Jul 22, 2013 11:57 pm

Where can I buy old or discontinued lego sets for a reasonable price? I have been trying to find this lego set I wanted for a while, but the only place i could find it was on ebay for about five times the price. Can anyone tell me a reliable site where i can buy old or discontinued lego sets. The sets need to have all the pieces and they should and the pieces have to be in tact. more importantly, the set has to be at a reasonable price.

"Reasonable" is always a challenge. Some don't even think of 100% (+) markup. It is a collectors market, so that will make it difficult. If the set you are looking for is very rare, you may just be out of luck. Complete sets may be out of the range, but you can always create them yourself.

Best thing to do is check Craigslist (some people just want to sell the stuff and don't care) and (of course) bricklink as among the crazy prices, you can often find a few sets at fair market value.

good luck.

Most LEGO sets rise significantly in price shortly after they are discontinued. I doubt you're going to find an online store that regularly sells discontinued LEGO anywhere near original price, but Bricklink is usually cheaper than eBay.
I've found that the best place to get cheap old LEGO is at garage sales or thrift stores, but even then the sets aren't usually 100% complete.

Being truly cheap - I downloaded the instructions for the Lego 4958 set then acquired enough used lego to build a reasonable copy of the T-Rex build ... NIB this set would have cost about $330 ... the only new things in my T Rex version was the powerfunction parts ( IR receiver, battery pack, 2 motors, controller = 14+6+20+12= $52) the remaining parts are used from a local used lego resellers (classic plastic bricks, all time toys) and bricklink... which I'd estimate is another $50 in parts or so with the total cost of the build around $110. .. my dinosaur isn't exactly the same as the original but it is really close for about 1/3 the price...

try local independent toy stores...sometimes they have older sets that might at least be at msrp or close to it.

I wanted a Lego cargo plane that was discontinued. I found one that was missing mostly common pieces for cheap and just downloaded the instructions and replaced the missing pieces.

I second Craigslist ... but it takes some time and a lot of hunting

Last year I picked up the creator fiery legend for 20 bucks (it was only missing two common parts)

And just today I was super stoked to find a very old set for 35$, I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. I love raised base plates!

Very old set?!?! The set is only 15 years old! How old are you that 15 years is "very old"?!

Something like this would be very old...
