Pick a Brick wall changes? Now Pick A Model!
Re: Pick a Brick wall changes? Now Pick A Model!
This is bad news. The Pab wall is by far the biggest reason I go to the lego store. It will definitely cut back on the # of trips I go to there.

I saw this last week at Arden Fair. Only for the less sophisticated buyer who doesn't figure out you could spend $5 for about 50 pieces, or $9 for enough pieces in a pick-a-brick cup to make several copies of the model.

If this works out, I bet it will be the end of the free give a ways. Parents, why wait in line on a tuesday night when you can come in anytime during the month to get the set.

I stopped in at my local Lego store Thursday night. Yeah, this sucks. The store employees aren't even happy about it. They apparently can't sell K2 boxes anymore either.

Because LEGO wants you to wait in a line on a slow day so one parent can shop.frackbricks wrote:If this works out, I bet it will be the end of the free give a ways. Parents, why wait in line on a tuesday night when you can come in anytime during the month to get the set.
What I don't get is don't I already decide what model to get (While looking at sets) and then gather the pieces (All in one nice box!) and then taking the boxed set I just got home to build? I mean I don't see the point of these. They are like bad Creator / Classic sets without a box.

I really hope Lego gets the message fast that these stink.
Re: Pick a Brick wall changes? Now Pick A Model!
I guess the good thing about it is it'll help cut back my PAB addiction. Lately my spouse has been saying I have too many pieces already. :(
Re: NEW Pick a Model Experience at your local LEGO Brand Sto
I think the point is the kids get to find and pick the pieces to put in the box based on the printed instructions. There is some fun in that for the young kids. It's like a scavenger hunt or Easter Egg hunt on the wall.

They cut the Pick a Brick wall in half, they won't sell K2 boxes any more, seems they are sending a message.
The brick wall used to be my favorite. I bought the boxed models to go with things I could get from the wall. I loved working on MOCs by combining these two ways of getting bricks. Without the brick wall it limits what I will buy in boxed models.
This will cut down my Lego purchases significantly. Seems all I can do is hope they change back.

Hmm... it seems like the enforcement on this varies hugely by store. When I was in my local store on the weekend they told me not to fill an entire cup with elements that were intended for the pick-a-model, but they had no problem with me fill in the edges of my cup with the 1x1 black round plates or filling about half a cup with brown 2x2x2 slopes.
I also hear that one of the models coming in July is a crocodile that will include green headlight bricks and some sort of green hinge plate. I'm hoping to get my hands on a large cup of each of those for building larger plants.
Overall, I don't like the pick a model. But if it gets better elements on to the wall that we can put in the cups then I'm all for it.

Sadly the store employees have been directed to stop this if they see it happening. If you are going to do this, use a small cup and mix in some of the other parts. The real downside of this program is that it basically takes about half of most PaB walls out of play for those that just want to fill cups.wkunert wrote:I saw this last week at Arden Fair. The fact that it seems permanent does not bode well for those that like to fill cups with different parts.

So far I agree that it's a bad idea because we are loosing PaB space but what will we think when the sets become interesting....

Agreed. After all, if they were good, why limit it to only customers that can visit a Lego store?Brick & Blue wrote:Iff they were interesting then why not put it in a box and sell it?lordoflego wrote:So far I agree that it's a bad idea because we are loosing PaB space but what will we think when the sets become interesting....

I went to the lego store today. You can use the pieces from pick a model to fill up your cup. You cannot use just 1 piece to fill your entire cup as no one will be able to build the model anymore, if that piece runs out soon. But the employee said, there is just no way for us to police, how much one person picked of one type of piece.
Overall there were about 20 bins will pieces to build the model the others were regular pieces that are usually found on the wall. YOU CAN MIX AND MATCH
usually when i go to the lego store, there are about 10 to 12 pieces that occupy 2 bins (duplicates). Now, I see just 1 or 2 pieces that occupy 2 bins. Overall I like this scheme. But its sad that all lego stores will have the same model. Would have been nice if they rotated the models between stores. For example 1 store has a plane, another store has a car and so one.

I talked to the Mission Viejo, CA store on 4/1 and they said I could not use any of the pick a model pieces in a cup. I wonder if the policy has changed or it is different store to store? Seems when they get close to replacing a model they should allow you to grab more of the model pieces.merchant wrote:I went to the lego store today. As for your comment about usually seeing 10-12 pieces duplicated. Well with half the bins to fill now, less duplicates. Your store sounds bad though. I have three Lego stores in my area that I visit, Anaheim, South Coast, and Mission Viejo. And before April those stores would only have 2-3 duplicate bins. BTW those stores are also amazingly kept straight and organized. Boxes are always perfectly lined up, shelves are full. They always look ready for a photo shoot.

I was told by the woman I talked to at my local store that you could put a few pieces from the PaM section in your PaB cup. Essentially a pinch.

Re: Pick a Brick wall changes? Now Pick A Model!
I would love to see an improvement of PaB, but this is not a good idea. Like another said. This is just a creator set without a box. What LEGO should do is look at rare/overpriced Bricklink pieces and try to fix the demand/supply. These pieces could make up 15% of the PaB and rotate as needed.
Or another solution to bad supply is for LEGO to get a list of the top 400 rare/overpriced pieces and make a service set (online exclusive) containing them. You wouldn't be able to focus on the pieces you really need, but trading and supply would trickle down.
I always get discouraged on many ideas because some pieces either have no supply or outrageous cost.
