It really depends upon the child. I think my first set for my son was a DUPLO castle (because I always loved the Castle theme growing up). He didn't really play with it much then I bought him a few of the very small Creator sets (very much like this new one... http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Sea-Plane-31 ... ng=listing
They are small sets with fairly simple instructions. He was able to build them which made me proud but for the longest time he refused to build other things from the parts and would get upset when others tried to build things with them other than the original set. Eventually he outgrew this and started build his own creations which still years later delights me (since we have this common interest).

Many will most likely buy Minecraft sets (like this one http://shop.lego.com/en-US/The-Cave-211 ... ng=listing or Superhero sets because their kids like the figures/characters. I guess it depends upon what your kids like.

If I could go back in time and redo things I would have bought basic brick sets like the one that you mentioned.. Bricks and More Builders of tomorrow set 6117 because sets like this (just pieces with inspiration) encourages them to be creative and build whatever they desire without simply building with step by step instructions. Not that I think there is anything wrong with sets like this. Builders (including myself) can learn new techniques and be inspired to create new things by build sets with instructions.

I really really the Creator sets (here's a link to the Creator page on LEGO shop at home http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Creator-ByTheme . I love the Creator sets because they depend less upon specialized pieces than some sets and most have 3 builds in one! so builders can build 3 different things by taking them apart and rebuilding them and they are usually fairly basic parts than can be used easily in the future for other builds. They vary from cars to animals. I really like the brand new set titled "Red Creatures" which includes a Dragon as one of its 3 builds. I don't have it yet but plan to buy it soon. Creator sets vary in difficulty and one can consider the age that they recommend on the box although its not always accurate.. for some it may be too difficult or too easily.

If I were the father of a very young one starting out with LEGO I would probably buy Creator sets, boxes of basic pieces and add fun to them by purchasing LEGO minfigures in blind bags (Series 1-12) because the mifigures are fairly inexpensive, there is a wide variety of types of characters and can easily help young ones decide what to build. For instance by purchasing a Knight figure would may be inspired to build a castle (with any color parts). If they suddenly get a doctor figure they may decide to build a hospital or medical emergency vehicle.

There is also "Junior" sets which are easy to build sets for young builders with fairly basic parts and a variety of different themes. There is a Batman Junior set and a Spiderman set. Here is the link to the Junior sets http://shop.lego.com/en-US/LEGO-Juniors-ByTheme

One of my favorite purchases was a book (with parts) that provide instructions how to build things with LEGO technic and specialty parts that function although its probably too advanced for a 5 year old here is the link to the book... http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Crazy-Action ... 1591747694

Oh.. and in general sets/themes that don't included Licensed characters are usually a better deal because they usually have more parts for the amount of money spent.. Superhero or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle sets would usually cost more (per part than Creator sets or original LEGO themes like "Agents"). I forgot the Agent sets look like a lot of fun if they like to "play" with the figures a lot. Agents theme here... http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Ultra-Agents-ByTheme

Hope that helps!
