[USA] TRU instore FRIENDS build
My local tru has a sign advertising a Friends building event. Feb 4, 12-2 pm in my area. Looks like you get to build a cute little lemonade stand. These events are normally pretty busy and I would not expect this to be any different!
Re: [USA] TRU instore FRIENDS build
I didn't see a sign in my local TRU, I hope they do it! I wonder if it will be advertised in Tomorrow's flyer? Perhaps I'll call to ask, but I'm not confident that they would know what I was talking about!
Re: [USA] TRU instore FRIENDS build
I found some info/picture on Facebook. TRU will donate $1 for each lemonade stand built to Alex's Lemonade charity.

Too bad it does not come with a Friends figure. But at least we're helping contribute to cancer research. This is one event that I hope many people will come and participate in.

Is it happening in Canada?

Not to rain on anyone's parade. But I have yet to see one of these handled well by my local TRU. Took my kids to a TRU Thomas get together, a big frustrating mess to say the least. Tables are not set up on time, boxes of stuff missing, once promo items are brought out, it's an ugly free for all! ((((( Sometimes the parents are worse then the kids! Employees just give up, stand on the side and wait the clock out.
Maybe it's a better experience elsewhere.

I have inoperable cancer and am unable to work. Any gifts would be appreciated. Thank you!

I'm willing to bet there is a correlation between the competency of your local TRU staff and the effectiveness in which these events are held. I have been to one when I was out of town that was HORRIBLE, but the local TRU does great events.

Thanks for the replies. Does restore some hope.
It must be a "NYC thing" then! LOL

Re: [USA] TRU instore FRIENDS build
It looks like I might have been wrong in saying TRU was donating the $1 per stand to Alex's Lemonade Stand, it might actually be the LEGO Group donating the $ and not TRU after I looked closer at the picture. Not that it matters in the end, although I was thinking TRU was being more generous than they are ....silly me!

We are back from the event and it was great. I got there a few minutes before noon and they were still setting up. I swear none of the other customers were there for the event specifically. They started about 12:15 and the two ladies running the event were great. They gave my daughter a bag to put the parts in - each cardboard bin was labeled with the number of pieces you needed. Last time at the Cars event they didn't put stickers on the bin to indicate the number and you worked off a sheet, this worked great. They also had ample room for the kids to build it there if they wanted. Or you could take it home.
My daughter got the stand, a sheet of Friends Valentine cards, instruction sheet, Friends Booklet (also available at LEGO Store), info on Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, two bricks that are printed with "Best" and "Friends", the sticker sheet.
Here's all the loot:
The stand and bricks:
We left around 12:45 and hardly anyone was there, they were encouraging people to do it and lots of parents of smaller children just walked by and said no.
Anyway, my daughter and I were happy with the event overall.
