LEGO Star Wars 10188 Death Star (2008 Set Retiring Soon)
July 14 Update: Death Star is now sold out on LEGO Shop at Home. The set is still available at Amazon.com (USA) and ToysRUs.ca (Canada) at retail price.
It looks like the life of the UCS 10188 LEGO Star Wars Death Star is approaching its final days. Released back in 2008, the set has been available for sale in the market for 7 years. Today, the Death Star has been listed at LEGO Shop at Home as "Call to check product availability". This status usually pops up when LEGO has very few quantities available so you will have to call them to place an order.
For those living in America, Amazon.com still has it instock for the retail price of $399.99. For those living in Canada, ToysRUs.ca still has it instock for $499.99.
Thanks to John for writing in.

Re: LEGO Star Wars 10188 Death Star (2008 Set Retiring Soon)
Greatest set Lego has ever built. The play value of this set is just off the charts. It was sturdy enough to survive my then 3 and 6 year olds, and now 3 years later it is still (mostly) intact and still played with often.
I strongly hope the decision to discontinue is just to create demand for a updated revision in a year or two. Would definitely plop down another $400 (well, hopefully it would be $500, instead of $400 with 30% less pieces :-/ ) on a worthy reboot!

Over rated set, with out dated mini figures and techniques, besides I can only imagine how many speculators have amassed this set over these 7 years... So now starts the secondary market sale! And over inflated prices. A reboot of the millennium falcon is incoming and with that the possibility of the UCS version.

Thank God, I'm tired of seeing this set in the catalog. Every LEGO store I've been in always had one, but the box looked as it had been kicked a couple thousand times.

That UCS Falcon set isn't happening so don't get your hopes up. It was scrapped.

The set is fine for any real Star Wars/Lego fans and if it's finally really done with than man Lego really did extend the life on that set.
Hopefully we'll see some new large UCS sets but so far it's been really flat.

Re: LEGO Star Wars 10188 Death Star (2008 Set Retiring Soon)
It's a nice set, recreates some iconic scenes but I just couldn't justify the price, likely cause I mostly grew out of star wars by grade 5.
Re: LEGO Star Wars 10188 Death Star (2008 Set Retiring Soon)
So it is basically buy now or pay more later if you want this set.
Re: LEGO Star Wars 10188 Death Star (2008 Set Retiring Soon)
Well I never really had a great need for this set, and even with the big sold out tag on it, didn't change my mind. Like everyone said it shows great and plays great but it a bit outdated parts wise and minifig printing wise.
I'm still thinking hard though!! Especially if I see this in a Lego store in the next few weeks.

What's with these comments about outdated parts and minifig printing? What do you expect when you are considering a set 7 years later after its release! Any set generally would be outdated 7 years later as lego keeps remaking old themes/sets.
Nothing to do with outdated pieces, but on the investment front, the fire brigade was also a set everyone was tired of seeing still available since being released in 2009. now that it was finally retired last year, the value has climbed to about $450 from $150 usd. I don't think DS would go 3x but lets take a guess and say that aftermarket won't be more than $1000 in a couple of years because there is too much supply out there.

TRU.ca finally sold out. It was sitting at the top of the most popular item but the Jurassic stuff took over the past day or two.

I may be biased because I have the UCS Falcon but I feel the UCS Falcon > Death Star.

There have been a couple reports from Lego employees over the last couple days that said they will be getting more shipments of the DS.

Re: LEGO Star Wars 10188 Death Star (2008 Set Retiring Soon)
Finally after 7 years. This is good because it opens up a spot for a new $400 Star Wars set in theory. Personally, I think they should do a Space Battle at Endor with Frigate and Home One midi-scale including a dozen mini ships. It would pair up well with the Super Star Destroyer and midi-Star Destroyers. PLEASE.
