They will let you in if you don't have children, but it's not really worth it.

10% discount with VIP, free set with a $100 purchase-I think the free set will be worth $20 on eBay-I see it as 30% off of $100

Well, there is the set that's featured in the lower right-hand corner of the calendar,
#850936 "Halloween Set" or
40090 "Halloween Bat"...

Nice holiday set. Goes well with Santa's Workshop. Maybe the second holiday set will have a reindeer with a red nose?
That Halloween set with vampire and coffin for $8 that has 11 pieces? Wow. 73 cents a piece. I guess that's where we are with these small minifig sets.

All right as a new AFOL my experience with purchasing in October from Lego shop is 0.
I'm definitely getting 70810 MetalBeard's Sea Cow, but I will also like to get 10245 Santa's Workshop and maybe 70813-1: Rescue Reinforcements; since I don’t want to pay TRU’s price.
I will like to avoid putting it all on my credit c at the same time, and sort of “stretch it out” with 2 orders one at the beginning of the month and one at the end.
My concern is how likely are the products at Shop to sell out fast, specially the exclusives?
Should I be glue to my computer right on October 1?
How it has been on year past?

I don't think you have to worry like that, it's not another research institute so it won't all sell out at midnight

Keep in mind Nov is usually brickFriday with triple VIP points and the second holiday set. I usually do one Oct order for set #1 and the rest as brickFriday orders (getting as close to $100 per order for extra holiday sets). The sets make nice trades or stocking stuffers.
