Those of us who are of a certain age remember the ubiquitous VW Bus and Beetle on the roads of North America. Lego recently released a model of the 1962 VW camper. This is a review of the model.
THE BOX:
It's a pretty big box.
INSIDE THE BOX:
Inside the box contains 15 plastic bags of parts, 2 small sticker sheets and 2 instruction booklets. The stickers and booklets are protected from bending and crushing by a piece of cardboard.
THE BUILD:
There are 115 steps to complete this model.
Start off with the air cooled engine.
I think it took me over 4 hours over an evening and morning to finish the model.
PARTS:
Interesting parts. Fabric pieces, faucet, and clear headlight bricks.
Extra pieces.
FINISHED MODEL:
FEATURES:
Doors that open and close like the rear engine door.
Pop up roof.
Shiny VW logo.
INTERIOR:
Fold up dinner table.
Rear bench converts to bed.
Sink.
Detailed dash and controls.
1960s hippy themes:
Make Lego models, not war.
Lava lamp.
Questionable green plant to the right of the painting.
SUMMARY:
Playability: 9/10
Design: 9/10
Price: 8/10 (10 cents CAD/piece)
Parts: 7/10
Mini-figures: 0/10
Overall: 9/10
Lego has done a good job with the camper van in my opinion. The build was fun and enjoyable. Unlike the VW Beetle model, Lego went with the studless look for the van. There are many nice and work features. This is a good set for any VW air-cooled fans.
Lets go camping with our Fabuland friends.

All I can say is 'Wow'. Fantastic review Dr_Spock. Amazing photos, and I thank you for showing us the interior of the Camper Van in more detail than Shop@Home's images. Good work!
EDIT: What camera are you using? The macro is fantastic.

I'm impressed that you have had time to go buy the set, build it, AND review it!
I love the faucet and the signs are pretty funny....to bad they are stickers. Overall this seems like a really nice set though. The curtains are a nice touch.
Thanks for the rewiew!

After reading your review, I found that both exterior and interior were better than I had thought. Your review has changed my impression to this set. However, there are other sets on my top list and I may not have chance to take this home.

This set was an impulse buy for me. I wasn't planning on buying it but I did. Now I'm going to pay for it (next credit card bill) but I'm a happy camper. :)legohunter wrote:After reading your review, I found that both exterior and interior were better than I had thought. Thank you. Macro shots were done with a Canon 60mm EF-S F2.8 macro lens.Legobrandon wrote:All I can say is 'Wow'. Fantastic review Dr_Spock. Amazing photos, and I thank you for showing us the interior of the Camper Van in more detail than Shop@Home's images. Good work!
