[REVIEW] Life on Mars 7314 Recon Mech-RP

The Recon Mech-RP is a Life on Mars (Space) set released in 2001. It is the fourth largest set in the theme, and cost US $20.00 or UK £17.99. The set contained with one Martian Minifigure and like the other robots/mecha in LoM it was modular. However, the color schemes wouldn't match up with other robots (sadly). The set is one of the first true mecha produced by LEGO (because of movement and joints-whereas older robots from Spyrius were not truly mecha, in a sense).

The set is a 3-piece mecha, with a cockpit + arms, ammo tank, and legs. The legs attach in a way that the top can rotate, which is a useful feature. They are designed well, and while they are not super-posable they look tough and durable. The feel are also well designed, and give it both the appearance and function of stability. The torso section is well-made, although it's arms are not as good as they could be. They are a bit blocky, but otherwise good. The only thing that I would really change (without making it too drastically different from the rest of the theme's style) is the flamethrower (or similar type of weapon). It looks odd, and could have been better. The tubes work well, and it's nice to get rare parts like that. The cockpit section is good, although there is the issue of requiring the Minifigure to have it's head down to fit in. There are two lasers (both different, one a megaphone with a trans neon green radar dish, the other a trans neon green scanner with a trans neon green radar dish) on the cockpit. The last section, which is also modular, is the tank. It has a nice and simple shape, and works well. It also gives it a more balanced look.

Minifigure
Image
The Minifigure is an ordinary LoM Minifigure. It's not particularly special (within the theme, that is). It doesn't pose well, and can't really carry weapons. It does, however, have a nice color scheme.

Parts
The set contains numerous rare/unique/useful parts. It contains a great number of plate hinges (the kind that has two conjoined 1x2 plates). It also contains old gray and old dark gray click hinges (first introduced in 2001, the only year in which they appeared in old gray and old dark gray). There is a lot of sand red, which is a rare color (the two back cylinder parts are quite rare). There are numerous printed parts, including two 2x2 round fire tiles, two 2x2 round vent tiles, some printed LoM slopes, and the LoM radar dish. There is a trans neon green scanner in the set (transparent weapons are always nice), a claw, and some tubes. The set is also great for making other mecha. In addition to this, there is a claw, which functions nicely.

Overall
Pros
-Rare Parts
-Printed Parts
-Great Mecha
-Rare Colors
-Good Design
Cons
-Cockpit design
-Flamethrower looks bad

Overall: 4.5/5-the set is great, my favorite in the Life on Mars theme (the only other one that I think can compare is the second largest-it has a great transport, which also doubles as a mecha, and a bunch of other cool features). The set also has lots of rare colored and printed parts. The only issues are the flamethrower, the cockpit design, and to some, the Minifigure.

By the way, sorry about the pictures. On one of them, the camera didn't focus well.
