First look at LEGO Ideas 21110 "Research Institute"

Post by Toys N Bricks » Thu Jun 26, 2014 12:16 pm

LEGO Ideas project creator Alatariel (Ellen Kooijman) has provided us with a first look at the next LEGO Ideas product, 21110 "Research Institute", based on her project "Female Minifigure Set".

In comparison to the original proposal, it's almost exactly as presented. From Ellen's own review, there are some minor changes due to parts limitations and structural integrity, and the minifigures have different designs than her project.

Read her full review over at her blog, "Alatariel's Atelier" or discuss in our forum!

Love the dinosaur but it better not be more that $20.

Wow! They kept it very close to the original design and it looks great. I think the dino skeleton will be a fun build for sure. When/ where would this be available?

If $20 or more is in fact the pricing, then we can all be ready for another round of B-WIng UCS blow out on this set.

This is my absolute first post here...but have been reading for a long time.

I am excited about this set. Hoping for a $20 price point as others have said. I would certainly pay that, especially if there was a good freebie at shop at home. I could see myself buying more and giving a couple as gifts too. It has a very inspiring quality.

I am someone who generally only buys the licenses property characters, skipping the yellow-head, lego-owned themes, but I think this is a must-have. Its well designed and has wonderfully photographed box art and graphical placement. It looks like it will have the same box construction as the Back to the Future time machine set too.

Shall we place bets on the MSRPs? I'll wager that it will be US$24.99.

I'm disappointed that they added makeup to the minifigures. It seems TLG always puts makeup on female figures and it's a frustrating stereotype

Besides lipstick to make it look like actual lips, there is no other make-up. No blush, no eye shadow, etc.
I have inoperable cancer and am unable to work. Any gifts would be appreciated. Thank you!

Yes, I believe the white around the scientists eyes is supposed to be safety glasses/goggles.

I think this looks great and am glad I supported it! Of course LEGO had to throw a blond woman in there...nice that they all have different colored hair though ;-)

I wish I saved the interview but I think it was a set designer talked about how LEGO didn't like blond hair in sets because of the yellow on yellow look on the box.

The Ideas blog has a new post about Ellen's visit to Billund. The post also states that the set will be available "early August" so it looks like we're getting both the Exo-Suit AND Research Institute in the same month!

Maybe this is the set mentioned in the calendar.

^ Do you mean the VIP Early-Access from the 18th-31st? I don't think so, as both the Exo-Suit and Research Laboratory have been stated as being available "in early August" and 18th-31st is decidedly not early, but mid to late August. There's speculation that it will be a yet-to-be-announced UCS set. San Diego Comic Con is the end of this month and rumor has it something will be unveiled there, possibly a UCS Tumbler or UCS Slave 1, either of which could be the VIP Early-Access set.
