[TnB Review] The LEGO Movie 70814 "Emmet's Construct-o-Mech"

Post by Brickbuilder0937 » Sat Jul 12, 2014 11:00 pm

Set#: 7081
Name: Emmet's Construct-o-Mech
Theme: The LEGO Movie
Year: 2014
Pieces: 708
Minifigs: 3 (4 if you count Unikitty)
Price: US $59.99 / CAN $74.99 / UK £49.99

The Box:

The front doesn't show the piece count because this is the european version of the box.

The Pieces:

Inside there are five numbered bags of parts.

Image
The instruction booklet and stickers are in a plastic bag and backed by cardboard to prevent bending

Image
The stickers are mostly basic construction stripes

Image
Bag one includes a 1 x 4 tile with a unique code that unlocks a surprise in any console version (not handheld or PC versions) of the LEGO Movie videogame.

Bag two

Bag three

Bag four

Bag five

Image
These are some fairly new pieces that caught my eye, they are mostly used as teeth in other sets. There's a total of 14 of these in this set

The Minifigures:

Image
This set comes with Emmet, Angry Unikitty and two Robo Skeletons. Angry Kitty is unique to this set, as is Emmets face printing.
The only other set with a Robo skeleton is MetalBeard's Duel (70807). The skeleton body in gray is unique to these sets.

The Build:

Bag one, after you build the figures, starts the torso of the mech.

In this picture you can see that some of the yellow pieces slightly vary in color.

The legs have very limited articulation to provide increased stability

The lower back looks unfinished and somewhat detracts from the overall look.

Conclusion:

DESIGN 8/10 - This set is one of my favorite mech sets, but it could be improved on the back side. The design isn't identical to emmet's mech from the movie, but if it was it would likely cost over $300. It does look very similar despite the size difference.

BUILD 9/10 - There's a variety of different techniques throughout the build that keep it interesting all the way to the end.

MINIFIGURES 8/10 - I am satisfied with the selection of figures that came with this set, especially angry Unikitty which is my favorite version. (Although she's technically not a minifigure)

PLAYABILITY 8/10 - Four figures and a giant mech provides plenty of play. The limited articulation of the mech's legs may actually increases the playability for younger kids as less time will be spent adjusting it to stand.

PARTS 9/10 - A good variety of large and small pieces, not too many technic parts and quite a few parts that are hard to find elsewhere. And of course, lots of yellow.

PRICE 10/10 - At just under 8.5 cents per piece (usd) this is one of the best priced sets this year.

OVERALL 8.7/10

As a bonus here's a comparison shot of every version of unikitty.

Thanks for reading and don't forget to answer the poll.

Thanks for the review! Sadly, this set is sold out in the 3 LEGO stores I've been to recently. Those Unikitties though...I MUST HAVE THEM ALL!!

Very nice review. I wish you pointed out which parts move though. But I think I can get an idea. Thanks for posting it.

Is there an alternate build for this set, like many of the smaller sets that have vehicle counterparts?
