Price: $329.99 AUD
For all those Unimog fans and those interested in bigger & better Technic sets. This year, LEGO has released their first ever licenced Technic set, the Mercedes-Benz Unimog U400. This is a review of the model.
THE BOX:
It's massive! I really like the flap that lifts up and shows the functions!
Licencing Details:
WHEEL SIZE COMPARISON:
The big chubby balloon tyres from certain Technic sets may fit but only 'back to front'.
The new tyres are an 'upsized' version of the tyres found on some sets.
INSIDE THE BOX:
Contains numbered plastic bags for easier building, 2 sticker sheets and 5 instruction bookets!
Like any other brand new Technic set, both sticker sheets & instructions are protected by carboard backing!
BUILDING PROCESS:
This model took me 3 days to build and finish! I put some elements in dessert bowls to make the project more easier! I even connected a battery box while halfway there to ensure that everything moves freely and there is nothing that could hinder rotation!
Model completed (but not the grappling claw yet!)
I even managed to put my camera in the cab and take an 'in-cab' POV!
More pics coming soon!
SUMMARY:
Playability: 9/10
Design: 9/10
Price: 7/10
Parts: 9/10
Mini-figures: 0/10
Overall: 9/10
Good Points:
Winch & grapple (they can be attached to either end of the Unimog, only if the end gears are swapped over.
Modular build (First starts with the mid-chassis with the internal gearbox & compressor, powered by just one PF motor & batterybox. Second, the rear axle. Third, the front axle and 4cyl engine. Fourth, the tiltable cab with 'hands of god' steering. And finally, the attachments).
Size (This set is indeed, the largest Technic set ever made when compared to some older Technic sets and taller when compared to the 8446 4x4 Off-Roader!)
Licencing (This is the first ever Technic set to be licenced by Mercedes-Benz as it is the 60th anniversary of the Unimog of course!)
Bad Points:
Pneumatic hoses (these are made from rubber which is much 'stiffer' than the older hoses and may require a lot of finger force to install onto the pneumatic elements and did hurt my fingers a bit!)
Price (This one is completely up to who is buying the set. If you're a Unimog fan and have a big bank account, I would say that this set is worthwhile. However, if you just want it purely to build and then do whatever you want with it afterwards then you are better spending that money somewhere else.)
The engine (To save space, it only had a 4cyl engine. Real Unimogs don't actually have a 4 cylinder engine, which is just not powerful enough to drive the vehicle, along with the implements and even carry heavy loads!)
And that's all for now! If I missed anything please let me know. If you have any questions please feel free to ask!

How big is it compared to the crane truck?

Thanks for the review. I bought my copy last month and haven't built it yet. Good to see numbered bags. :)

Re: [EPIC REVIEW] 8110 Unimog U400
Here's more of my Unimog!
I've improved it a little by adding an air tank to stop the compressor pump from working too hard!
Unimog without attachments:
Tray removed & cab tilted forward:
Crane installed on front & winch on back:
PTOs engaged:
Compressor engaged:
Panhard rod:
Portal axle:
Mid differential & underside detail:
And that's all for today!
