[REVIEW] Atlantis 30040 Octopus

Post by BobaFett2 » Mon Dec 27, 2010 5:08 pm

Indexed

While at LEGOLAND, I got some polybags. It didn't hurt me, so no harm done. The set is my favorite of the recent polybags. It also has some great parts.

Name: 30040 Atlantis Octopus
Parts: 42
Price: US $2.99
Theme: Atlantis
Year Released: 2009
Price per Part: US $.07
The Set
Image
The set is very nice. The look is octopus-ish, although it could be more realistic-but hey, this is one great polybag. I love how well the head fits in. The beak is the only part that I think could be improved, but even it is pretty great.

Minifigures
There are none. It's a polybag.

Design
As I said, the design is great. Better than most polybag and seasonal sets.

Build
Actually had one or two unexpected components, which is great.

Parts
Oh man, great parts. You get 8 black robot arms, which are definitely not rare but always nice. Then there's the 8 black dinosaur tail/tentacle, which is a really nice piece-again not rare. I can't seem to get my hands on any of these 3x3 radar dis parts, and they are extremely useful. It comes with an Atlantis Shark Key, and those are great.

Overall
Pros
-Great part value
-Great parts
-Decent build for it's size
-Great design
Cons
-It's rare

Design-5/5: Pretty much the best polybag set for design
Parts-4.5/5: Nothing rare, but a great part value and lots of nice parts
Build-5/5: For a polybag, this is one fun build
Price-5/5: Great part value, great price
Total: 4.875-Top notch polybag-I highly recommend it if you can get your hands on one. Unfortunately, they are more expensive than MSRP on bricklink.com

There is still buckets of these bags at Five-below. At least the Portsmouth Store near me in NH. It wasnt in stock back in November so there is no certainty what your local store may have.

Good review. I love this set myself as I love most cephalopods.

Five Below in Harrisburg, PA still has tons, for $2.99. I only saw these at Target once, which I think they were exclusive too earlier this year, yet that one time was in September and I think this set was released months earlier. WTF Target?

When I see the stock dwindling I'll probably buy more even if I shouldn't spend the money. It's a really neat set and goes well with or without Atlantis, but looks cool with the white squid from the Gateway set.

When I get a chance, I will post my customized version of this set on MOCpages and post a link.

5 below is a great place to get older small lego sets sometimes. I go there and see the smaller sets all the time. Not really a savings though.
