What does LEGO S&H have to say about the set?
Fight off the Micro Manager in the 2-in-1 Castle Cavalry!
Keep a look-out for Lord Business’ robots from the castle tower with the soldiers and knights. Get the crossbow ready and prepare the mobile catapult on the ground. If you see the Micro Manager trying to grab the civilians, use your creative skills to convert the castle into an armored Castle Cavalry. Take off and target the speedy, clawing menace with the crossbow, cannon, catapults and flame flick missiles. Includes 3 minifigures: the knight, Sir Stackabrick; the soldier, Gallant Guard; and Where Are My Pants? actress, Sharon Shoehorn.

The front of the box:
The glossy box shows Castle Cavalry at work trying to save Sharon Shoehorn from the Micro Manager. This set is one of four 2-in-1 builds.

The back of the box:
The back features artwork showing both models. It also shows some of the features of the models, the minifigures, and a small advertisement for the LEGO Movie Videogame.

Box Contents:

You have 5 bags of elements, a sticker sheet, and three instruction booklets.
Image

Instruction Booklets/Stickers:
Booklet #1 is for the Micro Manager. Booklet #2 is for the Castle Cavalry and the booklet without a number is for the alternate build of Castle.
Image

Minifigures:
You receive 3 minifigures in this set. From left to right we have Sharon Shoehorn, Sir Stackabrick, and Gallant Guard. Sharon Shoehorn has an alternate (happy/worried) face. The two knights have different torsos, legs, and helmets. The torso backs are also printed.

The Build:

Instruction booklet #1 is for building the Micro Manager.

The back of the Micro Manager doesn’t look finished. The Micro Manager tends to tip over and you really have to balance it carefully to make it stay upright. It does grip the minifigures well in its claws.

The back:

Instruction booklet #2 is for building the Cavalry.
The build is fairly basic and moves quickly. Here it is before attaching the castle turrets.

The two turrets serve as “engines”.

Here is the completed model along with Sharon Shoehorn being grabbed by the Micro Manager. It is swooshable, but you need to take care in picking it up as parts can come dislodged on the back quite easily. The flick missiles and catapult are sure to be a hit with children.

A few alternate views:

Here you can see the extra parts. The only element needed to convert the Castle Cavalry into the castle is the brown 2x4 plate. The rest are your “spare parts”.

The “castle” build

I still feel that these 2-in-1 sets should come with a brick separator. While I have several lying around, a person or family newer to LEGO might not have one handy. You really do need one to dismantle the model if you don’t want to hurt yourself or ruin the bricks.

As with the other 2-in-1 sets, you do not have to disassemble the Micro Manager to build the alternate model.

The castle build is fairly easy and quite basic. It is after all just a façade of the castle. It looks okay from the front, but it is not an entire castle. You do have a cart with a catapult and two other objects..perhaps they are lamps of some sort? You have quite a few leftover parts in the end. You are able to “lock” the gates.

Here is the finished “castle”

Here are the remaining pieces after building the castle. One issue is that you will need to store these somewhere “safe” if you think you want to switch between the two builds.

Ratings

Design: 7/10 – Again, they do a nice job of making this set a 2-in-1 build and incorporating a good amount of the pieces in both models. When you build the alternate model, there 16 leftover pieces (this does not count the “spare” parts). However, the castle is is not that substantial and really just a façade.

Build: 6/10 – The build is quite basic, although it is a 2-for-1 build.

Minifigures: 7/10 – The two knights do have different torsos and all have printing on the backside. Once again, you do not get any of the “main” characters with this set at $29.99 (i.e. Emmet, Wyldstyle, Lord Business)

Playability: 7/10 – There is a fair amount of playability with the two different models. The Castle Vehicle is fun. It is very swooshable and stays together fairly well. You do have to be careful when you pick it up and make sure you don’t hold it by the area where the knight stands (by the flag) as those can pop off easily. The alternate build of the castle façade, is average. You do have a fun little catapult cart, but the castle itself is very basic and not a substantial building.

Parts: 7/10 – I deducted a few points, because I feel that a brick separator should have been included. Many of the parts are fairly common and there is a lot of grey and brown. I don’t feel there are a lot of unique elements in this set.

Price: 10/10 – We are at about 7 cents apiece for the US price of $29.99, which is a decent ratio. I think it is a good price for the amount of entertainment that you receive, especially since you can make two different models.

Overall rating: 7.3/10
