New Architecture 21100 Submarine

Post by brickz » Wed Dec 08, 2010 10:10 am

Brickshelf has pictures for a new 21100 architecture set. They call it a Shinkai 6500 Sub and could be limited edition release.

Looks awesome, but I think it's going to be a limited-edition, Japan-only release.

For those of us who have no clue what this is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSV_Shinkai

The Shinkai 6500 is a manned research submersible that can dive up to a depth of 6,500 m. It was completed in 1990 and has the greatest depth range of any manned research vehicle in the world. The vehicle is owned and run by JAMSTEC (Japanese Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology)

Two pilots and one researcher operate within a 73.5 mm thick titanium pressure hull with an internal diameter of 2.0 m. Buyoancy is provided by syntactic foam.

Three 14 cm methacrylate resin view ports are arranged at the front and on each side of the vehicle.
Disclosure of location should be required when listing your finds!

Based on all the info thus far, I'm willing to bet we won't be seeing this one stateside. Or in Europe, either. Or Canada. Basically everywhere that's not Japan.

Yeah looks like a limited release to me, although I have to say that it is a very attractive set by LEGO. They usually don't make sets like this.

Playing with LEGO when I can. Where does the time go?

This might be a company based set like the Maersk sets are (or more specifically the Vestas wind turbine promotional set), with very limited availability and mostly on the secondary market.

Probably going to be WAY too expensive like other Architecture sets.

I think Asterios is right. If you Google Shinkai 6500 you can find information about the actual submarine the set is based on. Here is a link with cool info about the real thing:
