Post by bluemitch » Tue Aug 24, 2010 4:13 pm

Theres 16 minifigures but which ones do you think are more valuable? I think the pharaoh and spartan are the ones people are looking for the most right now.

Heres what I rank them
Spartan
Pharaoh
Mr.Maracas
Vampire
Witch
Mime
Surfer
Skier
Pop Star
Karate
DJ
Lifeguard
Explorer
Ringmaster
Weight Lifter
Cop

Because of "Army Builders;" I belive that Spartan will be the one most sought after.

I agree with your list, more or less. Especially at the top and the bottom.

I don't want a spartan, however I did pick one up due to this fact.
So he sits in his sealed bag waiting to be part of someones army.

People who want to build an army of Spartans.
Disclosure of location should be required when listing your finds!

I would rank "Popstar" and "Skier" after "Witch". I think it would be cool for a scene of a group of Mr. Maracas with a pop star singer.

Skiing is a very pouplar winter sport in Canada, so I rank "Skier" higher. :D

the ranking is terrible. all the rarer ones (3 to a box) should be higher as they are rare and have unique parts.

as an AFOL, BL seller/buyer, and person with "market insights" ( don't want to list my creds as that would be too narcissistic  ) i will list the criteria for holding the most value. of course, here we define "value" in monetary terms in the secondary market since it would be too ambiguous if we define it any other way (i.e. i like bike cop so much, i may "value" it more over spartan for e.g.).

1: most important criteria is rarity. any mf which is 3 to a box would fit this checklist.
2: rare and unique parts. rarity is important but the parts must also be rare as this means you cannot reproduce it yourself by buying the parts and putting it together.
3: "army building." almost everyone wants multiple of the mf. please keep in mind "army building" doesn't strictly mean collecting the same figure over and over again. it could also mean getting the figure for the parts. the surfer's torso for eg, which can be used as barbarians, hairpiece can be recycled.
4: versatility. can the mf or parts be used in almost any theme?
5: desirability.

So let's see how the checklist applies to your mf list.
Spartan: 1, 2, 3, 5.
Pharaoh: 1, 2
Mr.Maracas: 2, 5. people keep saying about building a mariachi band but seriously? not many will buy 3-4 just to make a band.
Vampire: other than the torso which is a great formal/regal tuxedo, it fills none of the checklist above.
Witch: similarly, nothing in the checklist.
Mime: 2. beret only.
Surfer: 1, 2, 4, 5. the torso is very versatile. barbarians, beach bums, etc. people might "army build" just for that but you can get the torso from other sets so i left out 3.
Skier: 1, 2. very hard to include skier other than in winter and on a ski slope.
Pop Star: 1, 2, 4, 5. you can actually "army build" for the torso, hairpiece, legs. but of course you don't necessarily "need" those parts.
Karate: 2, let's face it. you only get this for the trophy. you can potentially "army build" but all your martial artists would be wearing the same uniform. :D
DJ: 1, 2, 4. nothing like the 60s. you can reused the hairpiece and torso.
Lifeguard: 2, 3.
Explorer: 1
Ringmaster: 0. other than the torso, not useful at all.
Weight Lifter: 2
Cop: 3

the runaway winner is of course the spartan. next would be the surfer, pop star, dj. followed by pharaoh, mariachi, skier, lifeguard. the rest can be discarded or get just 1 for completeness.

The top hat and even torso are desirable to steampunk MOCers, I'd presume.

:o This is one of a good guideline to evaluate the mkt value. I usually judge the value based on 2 simple elements : rarity and popularity. However, popularity varies with regions and individual favour, and it is quiet abstract to guess.

top hat is not rare though, and you can easily get it without having to buy this mf. hence the price will never increase as a result of it having a top hat.

and i did mention torso is useful. :D torso is useful but mostly for formal attire settings.

hence the 0. ;)

Natelite, I think pharaoh should be ranked higher. It should be right after spartan. The reason I say this is because pharaoh also fits into #5 desirability and #4 versatility. I really like his gold headpiece and has very unique pieces like the snake. You can pratically use his other pieces to make egyptian villagers by removing his head piece. Surfer is still very cool, especially his surfboard. (but not as good as a pharaoh)

The tophat? Geez I've got tons of them. Not difficult to come by at all.

Nothing in my post said it was difficult to come by, just that the combination of pieces might appeal to steampunk MOCers - they can get a few parts they will find useful in one package (top hat, torso, even the head) without having to resort to Bricklink, as the only sets currently available that feature it are this minifigure ($2 - $3) and the Grand Emporium ($149).

Or pay the premium for the series 1 like I did. I will enjoy my top hat, thank you very much, along with the rest of my magician.

I think this topic is largely worthless. Which one has the most value? How about we switch that with the statement 'they're all super hard to find and come by and to heck with you if you don't live next to a LEGO store in the US?'

That will change in time.
More and more people will start collecting series 2 and 3 etc.(especially if they make lots more of each series), and want specific ones from earlier series.

i stand by my ranking.

what you just mentioned is the only plausible use of the pharaoh besides, well, as a pharaoh. what else can his hat be used for? or his staff? removing his hat and you have a male only. and you can't even build an army of egyptians soldier out of the torso/legs combo. so the uniformity is terrible for an "army" of villagers, don't you think?

surfer, as i mentioned before, you can use as a barbarian, boxer, martial artist, body builder, "naked cowboy", etc. the hairpiece is unique (at this stage) as well so it will be useful for mix-and-match townie. the surfboard is unique as well, though with only one type of print, it's rather terribly uniform but still...if you want variation you can apply sticker over it.
